This week I was at 080 Barcelona Fashion, I went to see Guillermo Justicia, the promise in Catalan fashion, new generations, a different designer, very original and realistic, rebellious in his designs..., I observed the number of young people worried about their image, a new genderless generation appears.
The new generations need help and urgently, their emotions emerge through all their senses, many lost, others convinced of their ideals.
But there was an obsessive image-related pandemic in the air, and that led to excessive care and concern. And of course, the skin is the first dress, what is seen... young models, influencers,... very concerned about the perfection of their skin and their image.
During adolescence, a stage of discovery and transformation, many young people begin to explore the world of beauty and personal care. However, what begins as healthy interest can morph into excessive worry known as cometorexia . This term refers to the obsession with cosmetic products and skin care, sometimes leading to unwanted consequences such as irritations or acne, something I personally experienced during my teenage years when using my mother's anti-wrinkle creams. I thought that this way I would never age and that took its toll on me with significant acne, the balance of the epidermal layer was altered, activating the sebaceous glands excessively and that, together with my revolutionized hormones and the stress of my adolescence... led me to acne It is difficult to treat.
What is Cometorexia?
Cometorexia is an obsessive preoccupation with cosmetics and beauty products. Adolescents affected by this condition often use these products excessively, believing that they need to correct non-existent or minor imperfections, which can lead to skin problems and, more profoundly, to issues of self-esteem and body perception.
Causes of Cometorexia
The causes of cometorexia are multifactorial. They can include social and media pressure to achieve unrealistic beauty standards, social media influences, and sometimes, personal insecurities that are magnified during adolescence. Additionally, a lack of adequate information about proper skin care contributes to young people making uninformed decisions about the products they use.
Addressing Cometorexia
The first step in addressing cometorexia is education. It is crucial that teenagers receive adequate information on how to take care of their skin in a healthy way. Parents and educators should encourage conversations about self-acceptance and real beauty, beyond filters and unrealistic expectations.
Basic Skin Care Routine for Teens
For teens, less is more when it comes to skin care. A basic routine should include:
- Gentle cleansing : Use a gentle cleanser to remove impurities without stripping the skin of its natural oils.
- Hydration : Applying a light moisturizer suitable for your skin type helps keep it nourished.
- Sun protection : No matter the season, a sunscreen is essential to protect the skin from UV damage.
- Antioxidants: due to the current lifestyle.
